Arsenal have completed the signing of a 23-year-old midfielder from Serie A for a club record fee of £85 million, the club confirmed on Monday, in a statement of intent as Mikel Arteta reshapes his squad for next season.
The deal surpasses the previous club record of £72 million paid for Declan Rice in 2023. The player has signed a five-year contract with an option for a further twelve months, making him one of the highest earners at the Emirates.
“This is a statement signing,” Arteta told the club’s media channel. “He’s a player we’ve tracked for over two years. His technical ability, work rate, and character are exactly what we need. He comes here to win.”
The new arrival is expected to slot into Arsenal’s midfield alongside Rice and Martin Ødegaard, providing Arteta with arguably the strongest midfield trio in the Premier League. The Gunners have also been linked with a new left-back and a backup striker before the transfer window closes.
Arsenal’s spending — which now exceeds £200 million this summer when including earlier acquisitions — has been financed by Champions League revenue, player sales, and the club’s growing commercial operation. The new Emirates shirt sponsorship deal signed earlier this year is worth £60 million annually.
The signing was met with mixed reactions from supporters. While most welcomed the club’s ambition, some expressed concern about the escalating cost of transfers.
“£85 million is a lot for any player,” said Tim Stillman, editor of Arseblog News. “But in the current market, if you want elite talent in their early twenties, that’s the going rate. The real question is whether this gets them over the line in the title race.”
Arsenal finished third in the Premier League last season, eleven points behind champions Manchester City. The board has made clear that Arteta’s position depends on a genuine title challenge this campaign.
The Gunners open their Premier League season away at Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 16.
