NHS England Waiting List Falls Below 4.5 Million for First Time in Two Years

The NHS England waiting list has fallen below 4.5 million for the first time in two years, new figures show, marking a significant milestone in the health service’s recovery from the pandemic backlog.

The latest monthly data puts the total at 4.47 million, down from a peak of 7.2 million in September 2023 and the lowest since March 2024.

Health officials attribute the reduction to a combination of increased capacity, improved discharge processes that free up hospital beds, and the continued impact of community diagnostic centres which have performed over 10 million tests and scans since their launch.

“This is real, tangible progress,” said Amanda Pritchard, NHS Chief Executive. “Behind every one of these numbers is a patient who has received the care they needed. We’re not complacent — there is still much more to do — but the direction of travel is clear.”

The government’s pledge to bring waiting lists below four million remains unmet, however, with analysts suggesting that target may now slip into 2027. The most stubborn area remains planned surgery for conditions such as hip and knee replacements, where demand continues to outstrip capacity.

Patients waiting more than 52 weeks for treatment have fallen to 185,000, down from a peak of 400,000, while the number waiting over 18 months has dropped by 90%.

“The waiting list is falling in the right direction, but the pace needs to accelerate,” said Dr. Sarah Wollaston, chair of the NHS Confederation. “Winter pressures, industrial action, and rising demand from an aging population all pose ongoing risks.”

The Royal College of Nursing welcomed the reduction but warned that workforce shortages remain the critical constraint. “You can’t cut waiting lists without enough nurses,” said the RCN’s general secretary. “We need a fully funded workforce plan, not just short-term fixes.”

NHS England is expected to publish its winter preparedness plan next month, with additional funding for bed capacity and community services anticipated.
